Say Goodbye to Nausea Holistically

Relieve Nausea Holistically

There are many reasons people experience nausea.  Some of the top reasons, but certainly not all of them, are acid reflux, food sensitivities, and emotional upset.  Nausea is characterized by feelings of stomach queasiness, excess salivation, sweating, loss of appetite or the urge to vomit.

Most doctors and medical specialists recommend medications or single-faceted treatments. However, here at St. Louis Allergy Relief Center, we look at nausea as an interdependent symptom with multi-faceted causes.  In other words, there can be many triggers that influence feeling nauseated.

In accordance with our holistic practices, we do not use medications, needles, or avoidance. We offer treatments for nausea that are holistic and natural. That said, in this article, we are going to give you a list of ways to relieve nausea that works for most people. These are tips, tricks, and lifestyle practices that you can use at home… or on the go!

Eating Ginger to Relieve Nausea Holistically

Many health specialists have started recommending ginger as a primary treatment for nausea. Let’s learn why.

Ginger contains chemical compounds that keep your digestive system stable. Moreover, ginger also speeds up the cycle in which food goes through your GI tract while simultaneously protecting your gut. There are also other benefits associated with eating ginger such as reducing cramps, gas pains, and bloating.

Gingerol, one of the main components of ginger, helps regulate our nervous system and reduce anxiety symptoms, all of which factor into triggering nausea. Ginger’s effectiveness has been replicated in studies with chemotherapy patients and pregnant women. Remarkably, a 2012 study found that a significant percentage of cancer patients experienced relief from nausea within six to twenty-four hours post-chemotherapy after eating ginger.

What’s the best way for you to eat ginger?  There are many options including ginger teas, thinly sliced ginger eaten raw, ginger cooked in your food, and even candied ginger.  Try it out today!

Peppermint: Consumption or Aromatherapy

Coming in at number two, we suggest using peppermint. Similar to ginger, peppermint leaves offer relief from indigestion, while also reducing nausea. Most specialists suggest drinking peppermint leaf tea. The positive effects of peppermint are extensive, as it has been shown to have a calming effect while at the same time breaking down bile within your stomach and thus reducing your nausea symptoms.

Peppermint can also be used in the form of aromatherapy. Some professionals use peppermint oil to ease nausea quickly. According to a study conducted by Healthline, peppermint aromatherapy reduced nausea in 57% of women who had just given birth by C-section. They also noted that 44% of the women felt relief within two minutes of peppermint oil aromatherapy.

Slicing a Lemon

Simple as it sounds, slicing a lemon and using its fragrance as aromatherapy for nausea is a time-tested remedy. Lemons contain chemical components that neutralize acids. These neutralized acids form bicarbonates, which provide relief and reduce nausea. Furthermore, lemons increase your saliva production, which also helps alleviate symptoms.

As an added benefit, the citric acid in lemons helps separate viral from healthy cells, thus reducing cold and flu symptoms.

Lemons help improve digestion and boost your metabolism, resulting in less nausea, better digestion, and less constipation. Lemons also have high levels of Vitamin C, which is crucial to fighting disease and protecting our immune systems. Furthermore, lemons are high in potassium, which regulates blood pressure and heart health.

And lastly, lemons are concentrated with antioxidants and flavonoids, which reduce oxidative stress. Think of oxidative stress as your body rusting from the inside out, increasing your chances of early aging and chronic diseases. Flavonoids also help blood circulation and metabolic health. As you can see, lemons provide a myriad of benefits for many different symptoms… and almost all of these symptoms can trigger nausea.

Breathe

Breathing—it sounds so simple.  But when you are struggling with nausea, it is hard to breathe normally. Therefore, in order to alleviate symptoms, we suggest breathing in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth. Inhale slowly through your nose to the count of three; hold your breath for a count of three; then finish the exercise by exhaling for a count of five.  If it does not work the first time, try again. Make sure you’re holding the count.

Fennel and Cinnamon

In addition to things like ginger and lemon, there are spices that can go be used to alleviate symptoms of nausea.

In addition to ginger and lemon, there are many spices that have anti-emetic properties—that means they help reduce nausea and vomiting. The two most studied are Fennel Powder and Cinnamon.

Fennel Powder

Fennel powder contains “anethole”, a chemical compound that reduces stomach acidity as well as flatulence. Fennel seed and powder soothes the muscles within your gastrointestinal system thus decreases gas, bloating and cramps.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon has many beneficial antiviral and antibacterial properties. And has been shown to help with chronic inflammatory bowel problems as well as nausea.

As you can see, recent scientific developments and medical studies have shown that nausea can be treated holistically and at home. We hope that you learned something useful from the above information, can use it to reduce your symptoms, and that you feel better soon. If not, consult one of our specialists today.
